I want an editor again. Someone who knows my tastes and knows what my friends like, and what’s generally popular. I want them to whittle everything down to 1 suggestion of what I should read or watch right now. It’s tricky though — I need to make sure they really get me and they really get my mood right now. Even with that, I’d like it to be someone who isn’t just my editor but works with a lot of my friends too. Who helps create shared context and shared enthusiasm across all of us. The closest I’ve ever come to finding this is when I discover a personal email newsletter where the proprietor shares their favorite articles, books, movies, music, art, etc. Newsletter format works best for me as a consumer for this use case because it has less noise than social. Plus, I can always reference the archives if there’s something I wanted to check out but later forgot about. It could be taken a step further by organizing the individual archival recommendations with tags in a central place.
It can take a while to find someone whose taste resonates with me but once I do, they become a trusted and reliable source. Trust is extremely sticky.
At scale, this dynamic gives influencers like Tim Ferriss, John Oliver, and Oprah massive tastemaker power. But I don’t see many excellent niche curators that have been able to figure how to effectively monetize their work. Is this a service you’d be willing to pay for?
